Description
During WWII, Chiune "Sempo" Sugihara helped about 6,000 Jews flee Europe by issuing 'transit visas for life' to travel through Japanese territories. He risked everything, even the lives of his family, for the Jews fleeing Poland and Lithuania. As many as 100K people are alive today because of him. Despite the publicity abroad, he remained virtually unknown in Japan while holding menial jobs including selling light bulbs door to door. It wasn’t until 1986 when a large Jewish delegation from around the world and the Israeli ambassador to Japan attended his funeral did the Japanese public, including his own neighbors, discovered what he had done.
